Your perfect holiday needs the perfect location

The word ‘axen’ means ‘oak trees’ which is a fitting name for this four-bedroom arts-and-crafts house with which was built in the heart of the countryside as a shooting lodge by Thomas Alfred Colfox, great grandfather of Symondsbury Estate owner, Philip Colfox.

Navigating the scenic track to the lodge, you follow the ancient contours of a medieval deer park, heading deeper into Hardy country. The lodge was once the scene of lively shooting parties in the 1920s and ’30s, complete with trestle tables outside laid with white tablecloths and teams serving up lunch to hungry guests. However, today Axen Lodge offers a peaceful sanctuary with breathtaking panoramic views of the Dorset countryside and Colmers Hill. There’s also a wooden cabin in the garden providing additional accommodation for two more guests.

Axen Lodge Overview

Tucked away at the end of a private track, Axen Lodge is the ultimate rural hideaway, giving you stunning 360 degree views of the rolling Dorset countryside. While the interior is stylishly welcoming, this property is ALL about the outside. There’s a charming garden and deck where you can enjoy long lunches and barbecue suppers al fresco while taking in the vistas, or simply spend time reconnecting with nature, listening to wrens singing and buzzards wheeling overhead. Alternatively, enjoy some bubbles while you laze in the hot tub. Even in winter, the views of Colmers Hill, perfectly framed by the picture windows, will have you gazing in wonder at the ultimate West Dorset landscape.

For walkers and dog owners, there is no better place to stay as you have miles of beautiful, peaceful footpaths accessible from your garden gate. Despite feeling so away from it all, Axen Lodge is only a few minutes’ drive from the centre of Symondsbury Estate with its café, independent shops and art gallery.

Far from the madding crowd, the ultimate West Dorset getaway-from-it-all
