Symondsbury Estate is proud to support The Great Big Dorset Hedge, an exciting project focused on restoring and expanding Dorset’s vital hedgerows.
We recently welcomed a team of volunteers from the Great Big Dorset Hedge to Symondsbury, where we had the opportunity to chat with them while they surveyed some of the hedgerows on the estate.
The GBDH team is working closely with landowners and farmers to enhance biodiversity and promote sustainable hedgerow management. Hedgerows are vital to wildlife, providing habitats, food, and corridors for movement, helping to maintain and support healthy ecosystems.

Hedges are essential for a wide range of species, from birds and mammals to insects and plants, contributing to the overall biodiversity of the county. In addition, they play a crucial role in climate change mitigation by acting as carbon sinks and reducing soil erosion.
The project also aims to raise awareness within the community about the crucial role hedgerows play in supporting wildlife and mitigating climate change.
To make this happen, the GBDH team is seeking volunteers to help survey hedgerows and assist with mapping and data management. Your involvement will be invaluable in creating a connected, well-managed hedgerow network across Dorset.
If you’d like to get involved, please reach out to the team at [email protected]. Together, we can make a lasting impact on our environment.
