The sheep on the Estate are a good example – they show and recognise emotion by facial expressions with other sheep and, just as we know the sound of our own babies crying, the bleats of individual sheep are distinctive, enabling the ewe and her lambs to recognise each other. Many of our lambs, after being separated from their mothers at 6 months old, recognise and go back to their mothers when put back a few months later.

I am renowned for being a real grouch when my holiday weather doesn’t quite come up to scratch, so I can sense the rest of the family are feeling apprehensive. We have in our party this weekend, two parents in their eighties, daughter plus latest beau, both in their 20’s and us, both in our prime.

The first thing I noticed apart from the sweet aroma of Seville oranges permeating the air is the impressive number of awards they have already scooped up. This year they are thrilled to have won a few Taste of the West awards which promote produce from the South West. Their standards must be exceptionally high as they are lucky to have H.R.H. Prince Charles, Prince of Wales as its patron.

It started off with the phone ringing early and Wendy announcing excitedly that Symondsbury Estate had won first place in The Melplash Agricultural Society’s best managed and cultivated farm.  Furthermore, we had secured best-managed livestock on farms 600 acres and over. With this wonderful news ringing in my ears, I stepped outside to be greeted by the birds singing lustily and the sun streaming over the hills.

On arrival at the Fayre Megan was so excited and eager to view the enticing displays and start to plan her wonderful day that she narrowly missed filling in that all essential lucky form.  Megan’s Mother must take all credit for keeping a cool head. (Although we understand how overwhelming it can be planning your wedding, hence, all help is at hand from the wedding team here at Symondsbury).

Around 150 years ago, the family began acquiring land – earlier owned by figures such as the Abbot of Cerne and Duke of Somerset - in small parcels forming a consolidated estate around Symondsbury. In 1900, William Colfox, a retired Bridport wool merchant, purchased the nearby manor house and 800 acres from John Pitfield. In the 1920s, his grandson William Philip Colfox renamed the land Symondsbury Estate and championed organic farming long before the term became widely recognised, continuing until he died in the 1960s.
